Thursday, September 28, 2006 Kapangan to collect fees from visitors
WITH the increasing number of tourists visiting the town of Kapangan in Benguet, the Municipal Government on Wednesday passed an ordinance imposing fees to individuals wanting to visit the locality's scenic spots.
The P10 entrance fee that would be collected from each tourist is intended to improve the services provided by the town to their visitors.
Kapangan is being frequented for its anthurium farms and raw silk production, among others.
Anthurium and silkworm production are gaining headway in the town as farmers are now adopting these as alternative sources of livelihood.
Under the ordinance, tourists, both local and foreign, must register at the Municipal Hall and pay the required fees. They should be oriented by concerned municipal employees before proceeding to the specified tourist destinations.
The Municipal Government and the barangays having jurisdiction of the tourist destination visited would get 50 percent each from the total entrance fees collected.
A municipal tourism council to oversee tourism programs and projects in the town would also be soon created. (JC)
