Baguio U, Cordi college judo teams get top awards

FOUR locally-based judo teams took top honors and almost toppled the national judo team in the recently-concluded "National Judo Team Championships" at the University of the Philippines (UP) campus in Los Baños, Laguna.

Although the men's and women's teams of the University of Baguio (UB) both came out at second place in their respective divisions, the women's team of the Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC) took third place nationwide and the men's team of the same school garnered fourth place, in their first time to vie for awards in the national tilt.

Those composing the CDCC men's team were first dan blackbelt Christopher Dominguez (playing coach); third kyu brownbelts Bert Bangsilan, Mayo Litawen Jr., Moses Sitan and Dominic Bela-o; and whitebelts Alijandro Gapongi, Glorexor Bisaya, Morres Belingan and Jason Balabal.

Forming the CDCC women's team were third kyu brownbelt Mary Cris Bantasan and whitebelts Crisanta Pitas, Melita Wallang, Myrna Tanacio and Gina Bangsilat.

Local judo enthusiast Janeth Martin said the CDCC judo teams represented the province of Benguet and had a very impressive performance considering it was their first time to participate in the event.

"It was notable that while most of the CDCC players are just novices, they bravely competed against the colored belts or seniors from the different participating teams," she added. (ENO)
