Thursday, October 05, 2006 Town's waste management drive gains support By Jane Cadalig
THE campaign for waste segregation and reduction by the Municipal Government of La Trinidad got a boost following the passage of two barangay ordinances anchored on the ecological solid waste management.
Barangays Bahong and Puguis enacted ordinances creating their respective solid waste management plans in a bid to reduce the volume of waste dumped at the municipal dumping site, first at Buyagan and later to the town's controlled dump at Sitio Induyan in Barangay Alno.
The ordinances require mandatory garbage segregation, re-use and recycling in all households to reduce the volume of garbage that are collected by the municipal garbage trucks.
Burying or composting of biodegradable waste is also required and must be done in vacant lots of every household.
In residences with no vacant space to bury biodegradable garbage, residents are advised to bring out and properly label biodegradable waste to guide collectors.
The town generates around 80 tons of garbage daily, majority of which is composed of agricultural waste. A 50-percent reduction of this volume is being eyed by the municipality.
The Municipal Government is fast-tracking the completion of its controlled dump facility in Alno.
