Friday, October 13, 2006 Cordi police on alert for terror attacks By Ernie N. Olson Jr.
THE Cordillera policemen were directed last Thursday to intensify security measures in the heels of a recent attack on an airport construction site in Silay City, Negros Occidental allegedly perpetrated by New People's Army (NPA) rebels.
Police Regional Director Raul Gonzales said that as per reports, the NPA bombed essential equipment in the Silay airport site and even seized the firearms of guards posted there.
"To preempt similar incidents within our area of responsibility, sustain the security of vital installations, to include communication sites and other economic key points," he ordered.
Gonzales said they should also be reminded to be always vigilant against terrorist activities and to strengthen security measures and counter-intelligence to preempt any plans of similar groups.
He added that all Cordillera policemen should be guided on the provisions of the three-tiered defense system, to strengthen the barangay information system and to improve coordination with friendly forces within their respective areas of responsibility.
In Baguio, more mobile patrols were conducted at the central business district (CBD) and its outskirts, and frisking operations were intensified on suspicious-looking persons who were reportedly "shopping for victims" in crime-prone areas.
To preempt any possible untoward incidents, mobile patrols were also maintained in the university belt and other campuses in support of the "Cops on the School" program being implemented by the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO).
The monitoring of vital installations such as cell sites and other facilities were also intensified.
