Ban of PG films trailer from GP movies pushed
ACTING Vice Mayor Leandro Yangot Jr. is pushing for the prohibition of movie trailers with a restricted or parental guidance (PG) classification during the showing of a general patronage films.
This, as Yangot observed that there are movie trailers with restricted (R) or with PG ratings being shown before the start of a GP movie.
"The showing of movie trailers with restricted and PG ratings before a GP movie undoubtedly reduces the essence of classifying the movie as GP," Yangot said.
He stressed that while the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) is the agency responsible for reviewing television programs, movies and films before they are released for viewing, it is still the constitutional duty of the local government units (LGUs) to promote and protect the well-being of the youth.
He said that "although watching movies is one mode of entertainment and relaxation, the government must see to it that the films are morally acceptable to the viewers and that all movies or films with GP rating showed in various movie houses in the city should not contain scenes not suitable for children."
"The public, most especially the youth, must be ensured that the movie they are about to watch commensurate to their ages," he added.
Upon approval, theater owners or operators found to have violated the ordinance would be fined P5,000 on the first offense and the revocation of license as well as a fine of another P5,000 for succeeding offenses.
The MTRCB rates movies and films prior to their airing and specifies what ages are allowed to view a movie or film. A GP rating denotes that the movie or film is for all ages.
The rating PG means that children aged nine years old and below must be accompanied by an adult while the rating of a PG-13 means that children aged 13 years old must still be accompanied by a grown-up. The classification of R-13 indicates that the movie is restricted or strictly for children aged 13 years old and above while R-18 implies that no minors should be allowed to watch the film. (DRO)
