Rehab, transfer of Baguio traffic lights being eyed
THE Office of the Mayor and the City Engineer's Office (CEO) are studying the possibility of installing traffic lights in busy streets in the city.
At present, the CEO proposed for the allocation of P14 million for the rehabilitation of traffic lights, as well as the installation of new ones.
Acting Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. said the transfer of the traffic lights at Kisad Road, Quezon Hill and Rimando Road are also under study, following the observation that traffic lights installed thereat were not effective in ensuring orderly movement of traffic, but even contributed to the clogging of vehicles.
Also under study is the setting up of four-way stops at intersections where, instead of installing traffic lights, pedestrian-driver coordination will be enhanced. Bautista said this system employs the proper use of pedestrian lanes, where as per international and local traffic rules, drivers are required to stop at pedestrian lanes.
At the City Council, a proposed ordinance was filed, which penalizes drivers if they do not respect the rights of pedestrians.
"The pedestrian crossing lane must always be free from any vehicle starting from each yellow borderline," said Councilor Elmer Datuin.
Ambulances, fire trucks, paramedic, police vehicles and vehicles in actual emergency cases are the only ones exempted from this prohibition. (RO)
