Village seeks financial aid for tramline set-up
IN A bid to increase its production of highland crops, a remote village in Kibungan, Benguet, is moving for the establishment of a tramline that would connect their place to the nearest market place.
Officials of Barangay Tacadang of this town said they are inclined to put up a tramline in their area, saying this is much needed in transporting vegetables produced by farmers here.
They asked Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap to allocate an amount of P10 million for the proposed project.
If established, they said, farmers will be encouraged to grow more vegetables and other crops that are naturally found in the village. Tacadang is one of the seven barangays of Kibungan and residents here say their place could only be reached by hiking five to six hours from Barangay Poblacion.
The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) has identified Kibungan as one of the towns in Benguet for the proposed construction of tramlines, the funding of which is expected to come from foreign assistance.
The DAR proposed for the establishment of tramlines in remote areas of the province as a cheaper alternative to the construction of farm-to-market roads.
Aside from the faster transport of goods, tramlines are cheaper and more practical to put up, and pose minimal damage to the environment. (JC)
