168 donate blood in Bombo Radyo bloodletting

MORE wanted to join but only 168 passed the screening, resulting in 75,600 cc. of blood on stand-by to help save lives during surgeries, accidents and other medical emergencies.

The output in the annual bloodletting last November 11 by Bombo Radyo's DZWX and Star FM here remains one of the biggest, underscoring the power of media in drawing support to causes, this time that of the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC).

The nationwide total of 1.678 million cc collected under "Dugong Bombo" made the outfit the top company to facilitate the biggest blood donation this year. The volume is equivalent to 85 drums of blood or 279.6 cases of litro-sized soft drinks.

Dubbed as "A Little Pin...A Life to Gain", the annual bloodletting coincides with the birthday of Rogelio Florete, president of the nationwide radio network.

The outfit received the "Blood Services Outstanding Award" bestowed by the PNRC last July 21.

"Bombo Radyo Philippines dedicates the award to its thousands of volunteer blood donors nationwide for their unselfish effort and concern to ensure the year-round need for blood nationwide," it said.

The bloodletting here was coordinated with the Baguio and Benguet Red Cross chapters chaired by Councilor Erdolfo Balajadia and Mayor Nestor Fongwan of La Trinidad town.

Bombo's station manager Pablo Mercado also cited the support of the medical staff of the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC) that teamed up with other volunteers for the blood extraction. (RD)
