Sunday, January 07, 2007 Town regulates cockfighting By Jane Cadalig
TO ADDRESS the issues hounding the conduct of cockfights in La Trinidad, the Municipal Council passed an ordinance setting the guidelines for cockpit operators and individuals engaged in cockfighting.
The ordinance was passed to regulate cockfighting, establishment, operation and maintenance of cockpit in the town and to address the problems brought out by the activity.
Specified under the ordinance are the rules and regulations that cockpit operators should comply with before and during the conduct of cockfights.
Councilor Jim Botiwey, who is among the authors of the ordinance, said the measure would serve as guide for cockpit operators and as basis for the local government unit to impose sanctions when there are violations.
Among the rules is the strict screening of individuals who would be allowed entry to the cockpit arena.
Money lenders would no longer be allowed to enter the cockpit premises before and during the games.
Ban on liquor and bringing in of deadly weapons would also be strictly implemented to ensure the safety of individuals inside the cockpit.
"We have to be strict on these rules and regulations to minimize the problems arising from the conduct of cockfighting in the town," Botiwey said.
The necessary permits and licenses from the local government should also be secured prior to the operation of any cockpit.
At present, the Shilan Multipurpose Sports Complex was issued a license to conduct cockfights.
