EMB Pollution Control Division Chief Rolando Reyes said the device would aid the agency in monitoring the concentration of pollutants in Baguio, specifically at the central business district (CBD).
Operating on a 24-hour basis, the new pollution monitor tool is expected to work faster and more accurate than the old high volume sampler and gas sampler, he said.
"Although unmanned, the device would work through a telemetry system which centralizes all information directly to us. From the data that we will acquire from the device, we will evaluate, assess and recommend measures and actions to reduce air pollution in coordination with the local government, the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), transport sector, and the public," Reyes added.
The device was installed on November 29 and started operating mid-December. However, their office has not released any data about the project since it has not been properly stabilized yet. In fact, the training on the proper use of such system for their personnel will be held from January 17 to 19.
Reyes, meanwhile, said during the last quarter of 2006, Baguio has a "fair to good" air quality as per their monitoring. He is optimistic that the new pollutant detection device would be "a big help in their monitoring and planning activities for a pollution-free Baguio." (JB/DB/UP Baguio Interns)
