P1M military academy restrooms in planning stage
By Rimaliza Opiņa

THE P1 million worth of restrooms at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) is already being planned and a site has already been identified, said Colonel Hernando Iriberri, chief of the PMA academic staff.

The restrooms, designed to cater to tourists would start construction as soon as particulars have been ironed out.

Funds for the rehabilitation and upgrading of PMA's restrooms came from the 2005 Annual Investment Plan of the city as sanctioned by Acting Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr., upon his take over last September.

Recognizing PMA's contribution to the local tourism industry, Bautista said the allotment of funds for the upgrade of the restrooms is the city's way of showing its appreciation to Asia's premier military institution.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Director Purificacion Molintas added that providing "world class" restrooms is a must in any tourist-oriented destination. She said these restrooms must not only cater to males and females but also to differently-abled individuals.

She said the facilities should also be provided with running water and the necessary toiletries.

DOT records showed that PMA is one of the most frequented spots in Baguio. Around 8,000 guests visit the military school every month.

Because of the large number of visitors, former PMA sntendent Edilberto Adan organized guided tours inside the academy to help enlighten visitors on the history and heritage of PMA. Guided tours include a visit to the Lorenzo Hall, Melchor Hall, the Sundial area, Lim Hall, the PMA tree house, Fajardo Grandstand, Borromeo Field, the Amphitheater and the Flirtation Walk.

Next month, around 10,000 tourists are expected to attend PMA’ annual alumni homecoming.

PMA Information Officer Dennis Solomon said more are expected to attend because family members of every alumnus are expected to be at the affair as well.
