Sunday, January 14, 2007 Security for air pollution device sought
AN OFFICIAL of the Clean Cities Coalition expressed concern over the non-deployment of security for the recently installed air quality-monitoring equipment at the foot of Session Road.
Perfecto Itliong Jr. said the City Government is supposed to assign security personnel to protect the machine from vandalism as provided for in the memorandum of understanding (MOU) inked with the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) in the Cordillera.
Personnel from the Public Order and Safety Division (POSD) guard the facility during the day but security at night is reportedly absent.
Itliong stressed security should always be present to guard the P10 million worth equipment provided by the EMB.
The equipment could detect trace pollutants that were previously not detected by the old pollution-monitoring device of the EMB.
The MOU also provides that the City Government would pay for the electric consumption of the equipment while the EMB would operate and maintain the equipment.
Part of the agreement is the installation of a display board containing air pollution levels at the central business district at any given time. (RO)
