Thursday, January 18, 2007 Limit on extra-curricular school activities sought
WHILE the conduct of extra-curricular activities in schools may be helpful to students, a Benguet Provincial Goard member is seeking a limitation to these.
Board Member Juan Nazarro Jr. proposed a resolution asking the Department of Education (DepEd) to limit and synchronize school activities that lead to the suspension of classes to give students more time to concentrate on their studies.
Saying the conduct of numerous extra-curricular activities sometimes interfere with the holding of classes, Nazarro said the DepEd should come up with a measure to minimize these. He cited the conduct of district, provincial or regional sports meets; press conferences; and musical and quiz bee competitions as among the activities that cause a disruption in the holding of classes.
"We recognize that these school activities are part of the learning process of our children, but it is not good to have a lot (of these), as these cause the suspension of classes, and leads students and teachers to absent themselves from classes. These affect the students academic (performance) and (force them to) deviate from the purpose why their parents send them to school," said Nazarro, chairman of the Provincial Board (PB) committee on education.
To lessen the days of class suspensions, the board member moved that the dates of these school activities should be synchronized. (JC)
