2 agencies ready for Ifugao skills fair

RESPONDING favorably to the labor sector's demand, the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) are preparing for a skills fair as one of the highlights of the Ifugao Foundation Day this June at the Provincial Capitol.

The provincial skills fair is designed to support President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's 10-point agenda, which includes the creation of six to 10 million jobs as a government priority.

Leonida Bartina of Tesda said the event, which has become a regular activity of the Ifugao Day celebration, would give opportunity for skilled individuals to join the skills assessment to obtain their certificate of competency or national certificate, which is one of the requirements needed for international or local job applications.

This year's skills festival would not only focus on competitions but also on boosting economic activities in the province.

As one of the international destinations because of its famed rice terraces, demonstrations and assessments on hotel and restaurant services like waitering, bartending and flower arrangement are also included as initial activities to upgrade the Ifugao tourism services.

Electrical skills of linemen and electricians would also be demonstrated and assessed. Livelihood participants would be invited to the event, Bartina added.

"Ifugao has yet to improve on its productivity to work its goal of sustainable economic growth and global competitiveness as a province. We hope to gather and assess as many skilled competent individuals in the province and release as many certificates for them to be able to find job employment here and abroad," she said.
