Monday, April 09, 2007 Councilor opposes underground parking By Rimaliza Opiña
AS THE construction of a multi-level parking building was brought up anew, an underground parking at the Melvin Jones football grounds might not be practical, said Baguio Councilor Antonio Tabora Jr.
Tabora, chairman of the City Council committee on public works, said while engineering works could be done for the construction of an underground parking system, fund requirements would not be practical for the purpose.
Aside from excavation works, its drainage system also has to be considered. Because of the digging, rainwater might accumulate and underground flooding might ensue.
It may be recalled that city planners proposed for the construction of an underpass from the Casa Vallejo to the Baguio Cathedral but while this is feasible, the project was not pursued also because of the expense involved.
The committee earlier held a public hearing on the proposal to construct a multi-level parking at the Burnham Park. It is not however inclined to recommend for its approval because of the opposition from various sectors.
