Monday, April 09, 2007 Deadline for Baguio summer youth cup registration set
ALL midget and mini basketball teams interested in joining the Baguio Summer Youth Cup invitational basketball tournament only have until Monday morning to register.
Tournament organizers said the opening program was set for 8:30 a.m. of April 9. The venue of this first citywide tournament for youth aged 16 years old and below is at the Camp 8 multi-purpose covered court along Kennon Road.
To register, interested teams must submit their lineup with the corresponding jersey number of players, a 1"x1" or 2"x2" photo of each player, and a xerox or photocopy of each player's birth certificate on or before the said date. The original birth certificate must be shown for verification purposes.
A minimal registration fee of P1,500 would be assessed per team. The registration fee would be used for the partial payment of officiating fees and other operational expenses, with the balance subsidized by sponsoring companies and individuals, to allow more participants.
Games would be played from Monday to Saturday only with Sunday to be reserved as rest day to give participants time to spend the day with their respective families.
Team trophies would be awarded to the overall champion as well as the first and second runner-up finishers in each division while individual trophies would be awarded to the most valuable player in each division. Individual medals would also be awarded to five mythical selection winners in each division.
"This was envisioned to foster camaraderie and sportsmanship among the youth of Baguio City, most especially among those aged 16 years old and below," said tournament commissioner Ernie Olson Jr.
This is to provide them with a venue to spend their summer vacation in a health-promoting sports activity away from alcohol and drugs and to serve as a healthy diversion for both students on summer vacation and out-of-school youth so they may develop a spirit of sportsmanship as well as sound attitudes and skills to promote a healthy lifestyle.
This is also to make the youth experience participation in an organized basketball tournament on a higher level of competition.
"Official Fiba regulations shall govern the technical aspect of this tournament," Olson said.
For the midget division, players must be between 13 and 16 years old while those in the mini division must not be more than 12 years old. All players must be within the set age limit for their division as of April 9. Current junior varsity, intramural and commercial players are allowed to play for as long as they are within the age limit set in each division.
While teams may be composed of a minimum of six players, only 15 players would be allowed as maximum in each lineup. And although the "no uniform, no play" rule would be strictly implemented, ordinary short-sleeved or sleeveless t-shirts are allowed, for as long as they have the same color and are numbered according to the submitted lineup of each team. Individual jersey numbers of 1 to 99 would be allowed players of each team.
