More opposition greets Bokod mine exploration

THE conduct of mining exploration in Bokod, Benguet has gathered increased opposition from affected communities.

Villagers in Barangay Pito of this town have filed their opposition against the conduct of explorations there by Magellan Metal Incorporated saying that this would cause damage to their place and the people.

Some 146 villagers manifested their disagreement to the conduct of the exploration.

In their petition, they asked the Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau of the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources to order the company to stop its activities in the area.

They further assailed local officials here for allowing the project to push through despite several objections raised by the affected communities.

"Despite the opposition asserted by a majority of the residents in the community, the exploration was endorsed by local officials," the petitioners said.

Earlier, residents of Barangay Bobok-Bisal opposed the same exploration.

Residents in these villages fear that the ongoing mining exploration would deprive them of their livelihood, aside from the damages that this would cause the environment. (JC)For more Philippine news, visit Sun.Star Iloilo.
