LAMUT, Ifugao -- The Ifugao Provincial Government, through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), has trained 84 out-of-school youth (OSY) in high-speed sewing at the Provincial Livelihood Center (PLC) here in line with the government's jobs creation program.
Ester Bulahao of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said the number of trainees who graduated has accumulated since the program started in 2004. They are delighted that most of these graduates are self-employed in their own municipalities while some were recommended for jobs in some private firms as high-speed sewers.
Aside from sewing, the trainees also underwent productivity skills capability building such as self-development, team building, leadership and basic business management.
The training requires a P300 minimal registration fee, which is used to purchase thread and cloth to be used by the trainees during the training period and for the purchase of materials for the trainees' final output for dressmaking and tailoring.
Side by side with the training is the mass production of uniforms for daycare center and Montessori school pupils. It becomes a training-cum-production activity for the OSYs. In this case, they earn while they are learning, Bulahas added.
To make the services reach Ifugaos who have migrated in other nearby provinces, the Provincial Government has decided to expand its coverage to include Isabela, Quirino and Nueva Vizcaya.
At present, the DSWD is faced with the problem on job placement. But this is being looked into with the help and recommendation of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda).
