Saturday, June 16, 2007 Carnival not a good social activity: councilor
THE operation of a mini-carnival in Barangay Betag, La Trinidad would not be a good social activity, especially since classes have just started, a town official said.
La Trinidad Councilor Jim Botiwey said he is not sold to the idea of holding a carnival in the town, adding that this would raise concern from the community.
"It (carnival) is not a good social activity for the barangay, especially now that the school year has just started," Botiwey said.
He, however, said the La Trinidad Municipal Council has yet to come up with a proper action on the proposed undertaking.
Earlier, the Betag barangay council requested the La Trinidad Municipal Government to allow the operation of a mini-carnival in the barangay for two months to raise fund for various projects.
In a resolution, the barangay asked La Trinidad Mayor Nestor Fongwan to issue a permit for the holding of a mini-carnival at the swamp area.
Town officials said proceeds derived from the carnival operations would be used to purchase materials for the dilapidated streetlights and to hire more police auxiliaries to maintain peace and order in the barangay.
"The barangay is in dire need of funds to finance (the repair) of non-functional streetlights (and) our budget is not sufficient to (hire) additional barangay security officers to help in the maintenance of peace and order," the resolution stated.
This request came a few weeks after residents of Barangay Betag opposed the proposed operation of a mini-carnival in their area, alleging that this was merely being used as front for the conduct of illegal gambling.
Although Fongwan still has to decide on the request, he already denied the issuance of a permit for the earlier carnival operation. (JC)
