City observes Fil-Am Friendship Day event

REMINISCENCE of the past while working today for a better life for future generations was emphasized during last Wednesday’s celebration of Filipino-American Friendship day, with World War II veterans, newly-installed city officials, representatives from an American Character association, Baguio boy scouts, communication groups and other public schools present.

The heroism of both Filipino and American soldiers was also mentioned during the special rites as city officials took turns in thanking the veterans and their families for their sacrifices during the war.

“We would not be here today if not for your courage and bravery, as with those who have fallen during the war,” Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. addressed the veterans present.

The same sentiment was echoed by other speakers as they maintained that good Filipino-American relationship survived through the years, even after the war.

The Star-Spangled Banner and Philippine National Anthem were then played while the tayao, the Benguet cultural dance was performed by the veterans and later by the mayor and guests along the City Hall grounds. Native rice wine tapuey was also sipped during intervals of dancing by the mayor and the guests to signify continuing friendship between the two contingents.

Baguio Centennial Commission Vice Chairman Dr. Virgilio Bautista of the University of Baguio (UB) also urged the citizenry to remain vigilant in maintaining peace and democracy, gained from the efforts of the veterans. “With the passage of time, said endeavors, presently, depends so much on us.”

A motorcade followed as city officials and veterans offered flowers at the Jose Rizal and Arch. Daniel Burnham busts, both within Burnham Park; Justice George Malcolm monument at People’s Park; Veteran’s Park along Harrison Road; at the Zigzag Road View Point; and at the Col. Lyman Kennon monument.

A fellowship picnic was also done at the Zigzag View Deck, with the veterans and those present.

The program was coordinated by the City Administrator’s Office headed by Atty. Peter Fianza and former Councilor Nars Padilla. (Julie Fianza)
