Sunday, July 08, 2007 La Trinidad dads seek stop to carnival operations By Jane Cadalig
LA TRINIDAD municipal officials want an immediate stop to the mini-carnival operations at Barangay Betag.
Saying the ongoing carnival operations lure minors to engage in illegal gambling, the Municipal Council passed a resolution asking Mayor Artemio Galwan to order the carnival operator to stop the activity.
Proponent Councilor Rodel Abelao said most of those who go to the carnival are minors, who drop by before or after attending classes.
"I personally witnessed the carnival operations and I have seen several minors engaging in illegal gambling," Abelao told reporters.
Earlier, barangay officials of Betag asked former Mayor and now Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan to issue a permit for the carnival. A copy of the barangay's request was furnished to the Municipal Council, which was referred to the committees on laws and barangay affairs.
But the committees have yet to come up with their recommendations on the request and Abelao said the issue is an urgent matter that must be acted upon, hence the passage of the resolution.
The barangay council of Betag, prior to requesting the Municipal Government to grant a permit for the carnival, already gave the operator a permit last June 7.
Barangay officials said proceeds from the carnival operations would be used to hire additional police auxiliaries and to finance the repair of dilapidated streetlights.
