IT investments pour into Baguio
By Rimaliza Opiña

BAGUIO is fast becoming a communication and information hub in the north.

Some US$500 million worth of investments were poured into Baguio the last quarter of 2006 and for this year alone, said Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr.

Bautista said the biggest locators at the Baguio Export Zone are almost done with their expansion programs, which he said generates more jobs and could cater to additional clients from abroad.

Moog, Sitel and Texas Instruments Philippines Inc. have just concluded their expansion programs and following Congress' declaration of Camp John Hay as a Special Economic Zone, another call center would be constructed there soon.

The People’s Support call center would also open soon after the construction of its building at the SM Cyberzone.

The presence of modern types of communication facilities as well as the put up of training centers for call center agents, medical and legal transcribers geared towards the improvement of information and communication technology here prompted the city government to drop silver as its One Town, One Product (Otop) and chose the business process outsourcing service as its new Otop.

Sitel (formerly Client Logic), which recently opened its second site, employs some 1,000 call center representatives.

It is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, has a mini gym, library, employees lounge, training and meeting rooms and sleeping quarters.
