Monday, July 09, 2007 La Trinidad limits scholarship aid to enrollees in public schools
NEW slots of scholarships are awaiting poor but deserving students of La Trinidad but officials said the grant would be limited only to public schools.
The Municipal School Board is evaluating around 34 applications for scholarship grants this school year.
Councilor Dionisio Literato however said the municipal scholarship grants would be limited this year to students enrolled in public educational institutions.
"We have limited the scholarship to enrollees in the public schools so we could accommodate more students," said Literato, who chairs the committee on education.
The local government allots P600,000 every year for its scholarship program.
At present, there are 43 college scholars, 37 high schools and five in the elementary level.
Grantees are given additional P1,500 yearly for high school and P1,500 per semester for college students to cover their school needs. The scholarship assistance also covers tuition, which is paid by the municipal government through checks upon the student's submission of his or her assessed fees.
Those with assessed fees exceeding P10,000 are made to pay the excess amount.
La Trinidad's scholarship program started in 2004 under the local government's educational program.
