Tuesday, July 10, 2007 Several coops in Baguio, Benguet are non-performing: report By Jane Cadalig
A SIGNIFICANT number of cooperatives in Baguio and Benguet failed to survive their operations, posing a serious challenge to the Cooperative Development Authority's (CDA) call for farmers, businessmen and other interest groups to form cooperatives and register with the agency.
Records furnished Sun.Star Baguio recently revealed that 588 out of the 962 CDA-registered coops are non-performing as of last month.
In Benguet, 382 of the 607 registered coops are no longer operating while 225 are still active.
Non-performing cooperatives represented 63 percent while the active ones represented 37 percent.
This trend is similar with CDA-registered cooperatives in Baguio.
Of the 355 coops, only 149 are operating while 206 have already ceased operations.
Inactive cooperatives outnumbered those still surviving. Active cooperatives in the city represent 42 percent while those inactive represent 58 percent.
Non-performing cooperatives are classified as cancelled, dissolved or non-operational.
Cancelled cooperatives in Benguet totaled to 220, which represents 36 percent of the number of those registered. A total of 124 or 20 percent were dissolved while 38 or six percent are non-operational.
In Baguio, 138 or 39 percent cooperatives were cancelled from the CDA's list, 52 (15 percent) were dissolved and 16 or five percent are non-operational.
Cooperatives are required to register with the CDA pursuant to Republic Act 6938 or the Cooperative Code of the Philippines.
