IN LINE with the celebration of Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa this August, the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) would hold a Gawad Komisyon writing contests.
With the theme "Maraming Wika, Matatag na Bansa," the contest supports the state policy of promoting the right of citizens to affordable quality education and the enrichment of the country's historical and cultural heritage based on Republic Act 7722 or the "Higher Education Act of 1994."
The contest is open to all writers, except those members/relatives of KWF. All entries must be original, not a translation of other language, and must not have been published and awarded a prize in any contest.
This year's contest consists of the following languages and categories: Filipino (short story for children and essay, gantimpalang collantes); sugbuanong-binisaya (poetry and short story); Iluko (poetry and short story); Hiligaynon (poetry and short story); Kapampangan (poetry); Bikol (essay and short story); Pangasinan (poetry and short story); Samar Leyte (poetry and short story); Meranao (essay); Maguindanao (essay); and Tausug (essay).
The theme for the essay contest would be "Maraming Wika, Matatag na Bansa" or any topics related to the diversity of language, culture and ethnic identity. It can also be a critic of any literary form from an author of his/her language.
Theme for poetry and short story may deal with any subject while short story for children should cater to readers 12 years old and below.
The entry for essay must be at least 15 but not more than 30 pages. For poetry, it must be a collection of seven to 10 poems, while in short story, it must be at least 10 but not more than 20 pages. For the short story for children, entry must not be more than 12 pages.
All entries should be typewritten or computerized, font 12-Arial, double-spaced on 8 1/2 x 11 bond paper with approximately one-inch margin on all sides.
All entries should be submitted in four copies and one electronic file. If send via email, it must be submitted as an attachment in MS Word document format, with the entry forms to follow not later than 5 p.m. on August 15. All entries should be notarized.
Prizes for the winning entries are P15,000 plus plaque for the first placer, P10,000 plus plaque and P8,000 plus plaque for the second and third placers, respectively. Three special citations would also receive P2,000 plus certificate.
