Wednesday, August 15, 2007 Veggie supply stable: guv
BENGUET Governor Nestor Fongwan assured that the supply of vegetables remains stable despite the heavy downpour that has lingered for several days.
"The continuous rain will not affect the supply chain. In fact, there was even an oversupply of vegetables at the trading post (last Sunday) because farmers harvested immediately after the rains," Fongwan said.
Cordillera experienced heavy downpour brought about by typhoons Chedeng and Dodong last week. Weather slightly improved in Baguio and some parts of Benguet on Sunday.
Fongwan said around 120 truckloads of vegetables were not able to enter the trading post in La Trinidad during the weekend because there were no buyers from the lowlands.
At present, there are no reports of damages yet on the agriculture sector. Concerned agencies have yet to consolidate reports of damages, Fongwan said.
The agriculture sector often suffers when natural calamities, like typhoons, hit the country.
Except for a landslide in Itogon, there were no reported geo-hazard occurrences in the province.
Fongwan said the landslide problem that isolated several residents in Barangay Loakan Proper in Itogon was already remedied after the opening of an alternate road to reach residents in the area. (JC)
