International Delphic Games set

ABOUT 200 youth delegates from different parts of the world are expected to visit Baguio City for the upcoming 3rd International Jr. Delphic Games from November 10 to 15.

The event is handled by the International Delphic Council (IDC), a non-government organization that aims to maximize and explore the talents of youth in the field of sports and arts.

It would also be supported by the IDC's National Delphic Council-Philippines (NDC-Philippines), Baguio civic clubs, local offices and schools.

Among the schools supportive of the event are the Saint Louis University, University of Baguio (UB), University of the Cordilleras (UC) and University of the Philippines (UP)-Baguio. UB would play host to the event.

NDC president Divina Bautista called for the support of these schools due to lack of venues for the games.

"We chose these four schools, located within the center of the city, because it will be convenient for the participants to transfer from one venue to another since these schools are just neighbors (and not because) we disregard other schools," Bautista clarified.

SM Atrium and the Baguio Convention Center would also be major venues of the event.

City Tourism Officer Benny Alhambra said plans for the rehabilitation of the center are already ongoing. The planning is done with the help and cooperation of the architecture and engineering offices of the city, he added.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) also supports the event.

Tourism Regional Director Purificacion Molintas said they would support the event through hosting cocktails and receiving the delegates from the airport as well as touring them throughout the city. She said their support would be hardly on the financial aspect, since they had a hard time raising funds last year.

The Delphic Games would not only showcase sports, said Bautista.

Included in the event would be the competition for best delegates in various fields of art. The arts competition is categorized as music and acoustic arts, performing arts, visual arts, literary arts, communication arts, traditional arts and ecological arts.

The Baguio City Council said this event is open for those who have already won in the national competitions and within the maximum age limit of 25 years old. Usually, participants are recommended by the NDC of their country.

The Delphic Games would run simultaneously in the six venues. The games and exhibits would officially start on November 12 and would end on November 14. Entrance fee for the event is free of charge and is open to the public. (PBM/UP Baguio intern)
