Transport group mulls bringing 'rechargeable' jeepney in Cordi

A TRANSPORT group is planning to bring the Earth-friendly jeepney in Cordillera to see if it would traverse winding roads.

Perfecto Itliong Jr., president of the Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers of the Philippines (Fejodap) in Baguio, said they are eyeing as experiment area the roads of La Trinidad.

The Earth-friendly jeepney was recently launched in Makati City. Instead of fuel, it runs on electricity. Similar to a cellular phone, its battery is charged for a couple of hours before it could run.

Although the electronic jeepney failed to gain popularity because it is too expensive, Itliong hoped this electronic jeepney would be accepted in the region.

Fejodap is a member of the Clean Cities Coalition, which advocates the use of fuel products extracted from plant derivatives such as coconut and sugarcane, more commonly known as bio-diesel and bio-ethanol.

The government and non-government organizations are advocating the use of alternative fuel because of the adverse effects on the environment of the use of crude oil, derived from fossil fuels imported from oil producing countries.

Use of alternative fuel results in cleaner air because bio-diesel declogs injectors and cleans fuel lines, lubricates fuel pumps and injector units and improves fuel combustion, they said. (RO)
