Wednesday, October 03, 2007 Curfew for minors in Benguet sought By Jane Cadalig
SENIOR citizens in Benguet have called for the replication of Baguio's curfew hours for minors in the province.
Saying this move helps in decreasing juvenile crimes, the elders, who sat as officials-for-a-day Tuesday, moved for the implementation of curfew hours for minors in the 10 municipalities of Benguet.
In a resolution, the senior citizens’ officials-for-a-day asked the municipal mayors and their respective municipal chiefs of police to strictly implement ordinances regarding curfew for minors, including the ordinances regulating the sale and consumption of intoxicating drinks in public places.
Baguio is implementing an earlier curfew for minors or 7 p.m.-5 a.m. instead of the 9 p.m.-5 a.m. time limit, in a bid to shun them away from getting involved or becoming victims of crimes.
The curfew was implemented last July 23 in coordination with the police and barangay officials. This banned minors or those 18 years old and below from loitering the streets and other public places.
Parents and other sectors lauded the city's move, saying this has been effective in curtailing street crimes.
