Sunday, October 14, 2007 Audit up on funds of barangay league By Jane Cadalig
THE federation of barangay associations in Benguet faces a possible funds audit following revelations that some barangays failed to remit their annual dues.
Board Member Eddie Amuasen said the Commission on Audit agreed to check the books of the Liga ng mga Barangays to ensure that each local government unit is paying its obligation.
Every year, the league’s members pay P1,000 as annual dues. From this, P250 is remitted to the national league, P250 to the provincial and P500 goes to the barangay.
Amuasen said there was an earlier agreement with the COA to audit the Liga dues.
This was raised anew before the Provincial Board due to the delayed confirmation of provincial Liga president Jerry Tanas, who will sit as an ex-officio member of the legislative body.
Tanas, barangay chairman of Madaymen in Kibungan, informed the Board that the non-remittance of the Liga annual dues caused the delay. Tanas was confirmed as the provincial Liga president last October 3.
Liga funds are derived from the contributions of the member barangays, which are charged against their funds and proceeds from fund-raising projects and activities.
