Flyover completion expected next month

THE City Government has secured a commitment from contractors undertaking the flyover project at the Baguio General Hospital rotunda to complete the long-delayed project by December.

Acting Mayor Daniel Fariñas said the project has been resumed following the release of the P60 million additional funds needed for its completion as worked out by Baguio Rep. Mauricio Domogan.

Fariñas said the contractor assured that the project would be finished in December but sought permission to adjust traffic flow along affected roads to enable them to work round-the-clock to speed up the completion. The request was granted by the city.

Fariñas, at the same time, appealed to the various sectors to just consider the benefits the flyover would give to the city like traffic relief in the area.

"Let's face it. Much money has been invested (for the project) and removing it would be impractical."

As this developed, Fariñas lifted an earlier order providing for the temporary closure of the Lake Drive after the traffic experiment proved disadvantageous.

Fariñas retracted the order, which was based on a City Council resolution, after police traffic chief Samuel Bumangil said it resulted in monstrous traffic build-up in the area.

He further appealed to businessmen operating at the central business district to cooperate and comply with traffic laws.

This after reports reached him that some business establishments are violating the vehicle entry prohibition along Session Road.

He said the law excuses no one and all should abide by it. He assured that no favor or exemption would ever be granted to these businessmen. (Aileen Refuerzo)
