Sunday, November 18, 2007 Indigenous lessons in schools assessed
IN AN attempt to assess the integration of indigenous knowledge in the school curriculum and nurturing indigenous knowledge experts, the Ifugao Cultural Heritage Office (Icho) is proposing a two-day workshop for school heads and staff of the Save the Ifugao Terraces Movement (Sitmo), and Ifugao State College of Agriculture and Foresty (Iscaf).
In the proposal, an assessment shall be conducted to verify the terminal report submitted to the provincial government in addition to the workshop on the integration of indigenous knowledge in the Department of Education curriculum, which is one important program of the Icho.
The indigenous knowledge transfer program is piloted at Isaf by Sitmo in partnership with the provincial government.
As the project ends on January 2008, the Provincial Government would like to have an assessment of the implementation on the integration of the teaching of hudhud in the provincial school curriculum in the elementary levels.
As stated in the tripartite memorandum of agreement, the provincial government would appropriate financial assistance of P150,000 annually to support the operation of the Ifugao Hundud Schools of Living Traditions (IHSLT).
The integration of indigenous knowledge in the school curriculum project requires the participation of state universities, colleges, DepEd, Iscaf, the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples and host local government units during the phase 111 implementation.
The activity is viewed by Icho as the proper venue to promote and facilitate easier and faster information dissemination campaigns to the different schools in the province through school heads.
One of the highlights of the activity is the graduation of the indigenous knowledge students who successfully completed the six months intensive learning.
