Thursday, November 22, 2007 Mayor orders draft of separate waste collection plan for CBD
BAGUIO Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. has ordered the City Environment and Parks Management Office (Cepmo) to prepare a separate garbage collection plan for the central business district (CBD).
In a meeting with the city’s department heads on Tuesday, Bautista said establishments at the business district generate more waste compared to the households. He also asked members of the City Council who were present during the meeting to consider reviving a proposal, which would allocate some budget for the provision of garbage receptacles in every household.
Bautista wants to emulate the practice of one of Baguio’s sister cities -- Vaughn in Canada -- where color-coded garbage receptacles were issued to each household to ensure compliance of its residents to the government’s waste segregation policy.
The sizes of garbage bins are no bigger than the 2x2-foot cans of oil sold in groceries and the market.
This led Bautista to wonder aloud why so much garbage is generated by a household.
He concluded that this is an indication that despite the census of households, there are those who do not declare the actual number of residents in a household, resulting in too much generation of garbage. (RO)
