Tuesday, January 15, 2008 Mayor to impose weekend curfew for minors in Baguio
THE proposed ordinance that would institutionalize the 7 p.m. curfew for minors has not been passed yet, and already Baguio City Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. is contemplating on extending the curfew even on weekends.
Saying the curfew was successful in reducing the number of street brawls due to warring gangs, with members composed mostly of in-school or out-of-school youths, Bautista said extending the curfew on weekends might further decrease the number of street crimes.
"We were able to control and discipline them (with the curfew)," the mayor said.
Bautista has not issued a rejoinder to his earlier order but he said the same exemptions would be imposed if an extended curfew were finalized.
Those exempt from the curfew are those accompanied by their parents or guardians and students who are required to work beyond school hours.
In the meantime, Bautista said the 7 p.m. curfew would remain in effect and those accosted would be brought to the City Social Welfare and Development Office. (RO)
