Friday, January 18, 2008 Tuba LGU supports 69 kv alternate line By Jane Cadalig
OFFICIALS of Tuba, Benguet have asked the Department of Energy to grant the request of the National Transmission Corporation (Transco) and the Benguet Electric Cooperative for the installation of alternative lines to ensure continuous power supply.
Installation of alternate power lines at the Lamut, North Sanitary Camp and Irisan sub stations is necessary to ensure uninterrupted supply of power to Baguio and nearby Benguet towns, the officials said in a resolution.
The power lines would serve as substitute to the 69 kilovolts lines of the TransCo, following a five-hour power outage in Baguio and in some towns of Benguet May last year.
The 69 KV lines serve Baguio, Itogon, La Trinidad, Sablan and Tuba. "This project shall not be construed as additional burden on the part of Beneco members," the resolution stated.
In November last year, Beneco General Manager Gerardo Verzosa and TransCo District Manager Marcelo Ganaden asked local officials within the BLIST to endorse the call for the installation of alternate lines for Transco's 69 KV wires.
Because of the impending privatization of Transo, Verzosa said addressing the problem is beyond the power cooperative's capacity. The installation of lines would cost around P20 million.
Verzosa asked local officials to help them convince top management of TransCo to fund the project.
If not addressed, Verzosa said the five-hour black out last May 25 could again happen.
