Sunday, February 03, 2008 Still no site for sanitary landfill for Baguio
TIME IS running out for Baguio City to identify a lot for it's sanitary landfill.
On October 10, a certain Valentino Carantes, who said titleholders at the Virac site, identified as probable location for a sanitary landfill already signed special power of attorney documents (SPAs), which allowed him to sell their properties.
The City Solid Waste Management Board (CSWMB) however deferred procurement of the site following issues involving the prohibition on the purchase of government lots that are not titled.
The proposed Virac side was also referred to the Itogon Task Force (ITF), formed last year to study plans of the City Government to acquire a lot for its landfill, in time for planned closure of the open dump at Barangay Irisan this year.
The Virac site is located a few meters away from the boundary of Baguio and Itogon.
Another site eyed by the Itogon task force is at Tadiangan, Tuba, Benguet, which is located a few kilometers away from the Irisan dumpsite.
A separate task force was created to study the procurement of the Tadiangan sites.
No final decision has also been reached, pending approval of the board and acceptance of nearby residents as well as the Local Government of Tuba. (RO)
