Locals pace Group 1 of 20th Corporate Cup golf tourney

CAMP John Hay Team 1 amassed 151 points and used its familiarity of the course to post a commanding 32-point lead in the centerpiece Group 1 division at the start of the 20th Corporate Cup played at the picturesque Camp John Hay Golf Club.

Jack Perez paced with 53 points via the Molave points system, or equivalent to a three-over at the challenging par-69 layout designed by Jack Nicklaus. Koh Seng Min, a former club champion, backed up with 52. The 46 of Goody Ignacio counted in the four-to-play, three-to-count format.

"It's nice to be on top but there's still two playing days to go and the defending champions will only start their round today (Wednesday)," said Perez.

Zamboanga 1, thanks to the 57 points of Enrico Solon, was the leader in Group 2 division with 133 points, then, followed closely by Techsafe's 130. Camp John Hay 2, another homegrown team, pooled in 137 points to pull away from the pack in Group 3.

Philippine Asian Senior Golf Association, meanwhile, launched its bid for a second title on a high note Tuesday after it assembled 145 points to build an eight-point lead over Power Lux 2 in the Seniors 1 division.

Iggy Clavecilla underscored the squad's dominance when he led with a three-under 57 point. Andy Co made a 45 while Pablo Soon carded a 43.

Cres Bendijo top scored with 49 and powered Power Lux 2's 137 points. Ben del Rosario contributed 46 and Ed Cataquiz added 42. Fourth man Boy David's 41 did not count.

With nobody making an ace last Tuesday, the five-day, four-night Baja-Mexico cruise courtesy of Royal Caribbean International and Baron Travel Corporation and the Texas Eagle golf cart from Turf Company are still up for grab.

Wilson Sports, Camp John Hay Dev. Co., CJH Manor, CAP Convention Center, Club Leisure, Le Chef, Golforce Inc., Federal Maintenance and Management, Asia Pacific Golf Corp., Warbird Security, Victorious Snack House, Kork Inc., and Rizgolf Marketing are sponsors.
