Thursday, March 13, 2008 Town to amend municipal tax ordinance
FOLLOWING the suit filed against the revenue code of Buguias, the Municipal Government is working on the possible revision of the tax ordinance.
Mayor Felisio Bayacsan said they will begin the revision of the municipal tax ordinance, which has been the basis of the tax collection of the town since 1998.
The move came following the case filed by businessmen against the tax code, which they claimed was illegal.
Bayacsan said the town began collecting taxes again late last month after the court lifted the temporary restraining order (TRO) it issued against the revenue ordinance.
Tax collection froze for a week, as a result of the TRO issued against the Municipal Government.
A group of businessmen in the town sued the local government last month allegedly for using an invalid ordinance to impose taxes on the people.
The group said the ordinance did not undergo the required publication, and as such, the locality has no authority to implement the code.
Bayacsan, however, said the code was passed following the legal process and the constituents were duly informed, as this was posted in public places before its final approval and implementation.
The mayor is positive about the case filed against the municipal ordinance, saying this will give officials and the local government room for improvement. (JC)
