Wednesday, April 02, 2008 Barangay clusters to be trained on composting
BARANGAY solid waste clusters will undergo training on backyard composting, beginning this month.
Backyard composting and the provision of materials recovery facilities (MRFs) in barangay clusters forms part of the 10-year solid waste plan of the city and implemented by the City Environment and Parks Management Office (Cepmo).
Cepmo Assistant Head Nazita Bañez said Barangay Loakan was tasked to train other barangays leaders on composting.
Scheduled for the weekly training beginning April 3 are the Upper Quezon Hill cluster, the City Camp cluster, and the Quirino Hill cluster.
The Cepmo will also schedule a field trip to San Fernando, La Union with cluster heads to see how La Union manages its MRFs.
Councilor Galo Weygan earlier proposed for the city to change its plans of setting up a sanitary landfill and invest in MRFs.
Compared to the high cost and maintenance of a landfill, Weygan said that MRFs are cheaper to maintain and it yields income to barangay clusters if properly managed.
Referred to the City Council committee on environment, the proposal was endorsed to the solid waste technical working board for study. (RO)
