Most districts in Baguio are scheduled to open their inter-barangay games this week.
SK Federation president and Councilor Gloria Ysabel de Vera explained that this was to promote sports as a means of staying fit, and as a means of more creative and relevant extra-curricular activity to provide an opportunity for young athletes to develop their skills and talents in basketball and to promote camaraderie among the youth and various SK chairpersons of Baguio.
She said to be eligible to participate, a player must be a certified SK member in his barangay, a resident of the same for at least six months, 15 to 18 years old or must not have been born after March 31, 1990; and have played in any school varsity team that participated in the recent Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League (BBEAL).
According to her, each team must have a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 15 players. She said the teams have the freedom to choose the name of their team, but the name chosen shall be subject to the final approval of the tournament organizers.
Requirements for team registration are one 2" x 2" picture and photocopy of each player's birth certificate, a certificate of residency from the team's barangay leader, and a registration fee to cover expenses in running the tournament as well as the hiring of accredited Basketball Association of the Philippines referees and table officials, who shall oversee the tournament from the elimination round up to the finals, trophies and certificates.
De Vera explained that the inter-barangay tournaments will first be conducted within each of Baguio's 20 districts, and the winners of these shall face off in an inter-district meet, to come up with the top winners city-wide. (ENO)
