Wednesday, April 09, 2008 DepEd stresses need for proper singing of national anthem
ON SUNDAY'S singing of the Philippine Anthem by singer Charisse Pempengco at the boxing ring for the boxing match of Gerry Peñalosa and Boom Boom Bautista, the lyrics was correct and properly pronounced, yet something was amiss.
Just like previous performances on the singing of the national anthem, the tempo was slower than the 4/4 beat.
"It should be a marching tempo, not pop," Education Undersecretary Ramon Bacani told reporters in an interview at Teacher's Camp.
With some singers still failing to sing the proper tempo of the "Lupang Hinirang," Bacani saw the need to reiterate in schools how the country's national anthem should be sung.
To promote nationalism, the education department requires all government schools to sing without a recorded rendition of the National Anthem.
"We have to remind schools to sing the National Anthem properly," Bacani said. (RO)
