Cordi provinces now get 'equal' FMR funds
By Jane Cadalig

CORDILLERA governors will no longer complain of inequitable fund allocation.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) committed P10 million each for the construction of farm-to-market roads (FMRs) of the six provinces in the region.

Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan said the commitment was made during a meeting between Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap and governors from various provinces in the country.

The four Cordillera governors earlier complained of the supposed inequitable distribution of funds for the construction of FMRs in the region, hinting Benguet was getting more than the rest of the provinces.

The DA denied this, saying fund allocation is based on the volume of production in a province.

The DA initiated the meeting to know the problems besetting the provinces.

Aside from the financial assistance, each province in the region is also allotted a heavy equipment to help in the construction of FMRs and in clearing operations.

Rice producing provinces like Apayao, Kalinga and Ifugao are also provided with flatbed dryers.

Fongwan said the governors were also assured the country is not suffering from a rice shortage.

"The supposed lack of rice supply is only a consequence of the world food crisis. We have enough supply in the country," he said.
