Tuesday, May 06, 2008 Group hits new traffic scheme By Rimaliza Opiña
THE current reroute scheme along major roads at the business district may have gotten good assessment from some sectors, but those in the hospitality industry want to revert to the former traffic route.
The rerouting scheme does not favor tourists and residents alike, claimed Jeanine Chan, president of the Baguio Association of Hotels and Inns (Bahai).
Having been used to the old routes, many tourists are confused especially at night, Chan said, adding that residents are also inconvenienced when caught in a traffic jam at Leonard Wood Road.
The Traffic Management Branch of Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) last month imposed the one-traffic scheme at Upper Session Road.
Chan said the old scheme and implementation of the Number Coding Scheme is still the best way to regulate the number of vehicles using the city's roads.
Drivers likewise are complaining about the present scheme, claiming the route is long and circuitous. Drivers plying the PNR route also complained that Aurora Hill and Trancoville drivers pick up passengers, thereby affecting their income.
This issue was referred to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). Lookouts have been assigned in the area to guard other jeepney associations from loading passengers catered by another jeepney association.
