Galwan: LT dumpsite closed in 2 months
By Jane Cadalig

LA TRINIDAD'S open dump facility at Buyagan will be closed in two months.

Mayor Artemio Galwan said activities for the closure of the Buyagan dumpsite are underway and are expected to be completed after 60 days.

Galwan said the two-month closure project will give the Municipal Government enough time to complete the facilities at the sanitary landfill in Barangay Alno, which will be opened for operations soon.

The Municipal Government allocated P10 million for the closure of the open dumpsite at Buyagan.

The town is constructing an impounding facility and adding slope protection measures to avoid garbage spillage from the open dump.

Galwan said the area would be left an open space as advised by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The open dump will be planted with greeneries. "Construction of buildings will not be allowed in the area," the mayor added.

La Trinidad started implementing the Buyagan closure project this month. It was planned last year.

The municipality is the first local government in the Cordillera to complete its engineered sanitary landfill, a mandate of Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act from every locality.

Landfills can only accommodate residual waste, thus the need for the public to segregate garbage starting from their households and establishments.
