Sunday, May 11, 2008 Weygan proposal on solid waste junked By Rimaliza Opiña
THE city does not intend to revise its solid waste management plan despite efforts by a member of council to alter some of its provisions.
Having taken years to come up with a 10-year solid waste plan, Mayor Reinaldo Bautista Jr. said diverting it would not only waste time and effort put into crafting it but also sends the wrong impression to the national solid waste management board that officials here could not make up their minds on solid waste issues.
Bautista also said if the solid waste management plan is revised now, implementation would again take more time for this would have to be reviewed and approved by the national solid waste board.
Salient points of the solid waste plan are the putting up of an engineered sanitary landfill (ESL), establishment of materials recovery facilities (MRF) in barangay clusters, and putting up of cooperatives for the selling of materials derived from the processing of recyclable materials.
Councilor Galo Weygan is pushing for the abandonment of plans for the establishment of an ESL.
He suggested for the solid waste management team to channel funds to the establishment of MRFs instead.
"The city could save more if funds were concentrated on MRFs," said Weygan.
Weygan's plan however was turned down as officials stressed the city should implement only one program.
