Wednesday, May 28, 2008 Vendors can't sell electronic gadgets By Rimaliza Opiña
SIDEWALK vendors should not be allowed to sell electronic gadgets or devices.
Trade Provincial Director Freda Gawisan said these devices should only be sold in electrical shops, as they have to be inspected and conform to product safety standards.
Gawisan made the comment in the recently concluded public hearing on the proposal to hold a night market. Electronic devices and gadgets are included in the list of items that can be sold in the proposed night market.
However, to keep track of devices that have been inspected and those that are not, Gawisan said these should be sold only in shops authorized to sell electrical equipment.
During the public hearing, vendors opposed the first-come, first-served proposal as well as the P50 per night, per vendor fee.
However, Gawisan said the fees are reasonable for some of the funds, which will be used for the hiring of additional employees to monitor compliance with the night market policies, will be subsidized by the City Government.
The proposed night market will be held at Diego Silang, Harrison, Calderon and Claudio streets.
