Monday, June 09, 2008 EMB orders city to solve Irisan garbage spill By Jane Cadalig
THE Baguio City Government should address the problem on garbage spillage the soonest possible time, the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) said.
EMB-Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR) Director Paquito Moreno said Baguio's Irisan dumpsite problem should be solved to address the clamor of residents in the nearby town of Tuba.
The EMB, together with city and Tuba officials, recently conducted an ocular inspection of the areas affected by the garbage spills from the Irisan dumpsite, a recurring problem for residents of Asin Road in Tuba.
This came after residents complain anew on the garbage spills, following strong rains last month.
Among the recommendations the city should adopt includes the construction of retaining walls to contain the garbage and prevent these from spilling over to Tuba.
Moreno said the city was already given the authority to shut down the operations of the Irisan dumpsite. He said the City Government should act the soonest on its garbage problem, despite the hitches being encountered.
The City Government is scouting areas in the nearby towns of Itogon and Tuba for the construction of its engineered sanitary landfill, as mandated by Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
The local government of Tuba has asked the city to immediately comply with the recommendations of the team that inspected the recent garbage spills in Tuba.
