Saturday, June 28, 2008 Wrong name lands man in jail
THERE are instances when a person is arrested on "mistaken identity." But this seems to be the first time a man was apprehended for giving the wrong identity.
This happened to Bonin Dauyong Hortelano, 20, of Tenerace, San Vicente Village, when he unwittingly met policeman Jeoffer Banglayan at Assumption Road last June 25.
According to Banglayan, he saw Hortelano at 4:30 p.m. last Wednesday and thought he was familiar. When Banglayan approached Hortelano and asked for his name, the civilian allegedly identified himself as Vincent Tampoc Daliyao.
At first, the policeman accepted the name. When he reached the Baguio Police-Station 7, he immediately approached the bulletin board and was surprised to see the picture of Hortelano.
Banglayan learned that Hortelano was a wanted person for attempted theft, a case of which was filed a few weeks earlier.
Banglayan rushed to Assumption Road and handcuffed Hortelano. He then brought the suspect to the police station.
Judge Maria Clarita Casuga-Tabin issued a warrant of arrest against Hortelano for concealing his true name. The case is docketed under account number 120904 with a recommended bail of P1,000.
Hortelano's parents posted bail for his temporary release. (JHP/CE)
