Sunday, June 29, 2008 'Walk, Baguio, Walk' to be institutionalized
WITH the success generated from the "Walk, Baguio Walk" project last June 2, the activity may become a regular part of every government office's walk to and from work project, if the proposal to institutionalize it is approved.
Baguio City Vice Mayor Daniel Fariñas said participants to the first walk project found the program fitting not only for fuel conservation but it also lessens the number of motor vehicles plying the city's roads.
Fariñas said he does not see a problem in implanting the project for Baguio's climate is suitable for walking.
If institutionalized, the project will be implemented on both private and public institutions every month.
Around 2,000 joined the June 2 walk activity at the Baguio Athletic Bowl. It coincided with the observance of the National Flag Month and the 20th anniversary of the environment group, the Baguio Regreening Movement.
Next month, the Walk Baguio Walk will reportedly be hosted by the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center.
To complement the walking project is Baguio's car less days.
Under the proposal, one Friday of every month will be a car less day. No penalties will be imposed on those who choose to use their vehicles but incentives will be given to individuals, associations and establishments, which participate in the car less days.
Plaques of recognition, prizes that either comes in the form of cash or kind will be given to regular participants. (RO)
