Sunday, June 29, 2008 P1M eyed for additional city traffic personnel
WITH the lack of manpower confronting members of the Traffic Management Branch (TMB) of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO), local officials have asked the regional command of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to coordinate the plans of hiring police auxiliaries.
A million pesos in appropriations is being eyed at the Baguio City council to hire police auxiliaries. Screening of applicants for police auxiliaries will be done by the TMB.
"The BCPO depends on the supply of personnel coming from the PNP but such supply seems to fall short of what Baguio traffic truly needs," said Vice Mayor Daniel Fariñas, who is pushing for the allocation of funds for the purpose.
In addition, Fariñas filed a separate proposed resolution requesting the City Engineer's Office and the TMB to evaluate all traffic lights are no longer functioning, are in need of repair or those that are not needed.
The proposal is an offshoot to a meeting attended by taxi operators who suggested that traffic lights all over Baguio needs to be repaired, replaced or removed.
Some drivers also suggested using a manually operated traffic light system, than having these pre-programmed like what is currently practiced. (RO)
